Brian Eno /// “Deep Blue Day” /// Apollo Atmospheres & Soundtracks
Emotion and music pose a chicken-or-the-egg conundrum. Do you put on an album that suits your mood, or does your mood emboss the sound?—and if it’s the former, well, do you attempt to match your current mood or subvert it? I listen to crushingly sad songs while stuck in a depressive valley; others pick artists with a positive energy. Yet when it comes to, say, a Brian Eno composition, we’re faced with a drifting neutrality that can’t last, no matter how gently ambient: sooner or later it’s the bleakest or happiest or most sublime object we’ve encountered that day.
